Prognostic Validity of Red Cell Distribution Width in Neonatal Sepsis

چکیده مقاله:

Background Neonatal sepsis is one of the most critical illness in neonates that is responsible for a great proportion of morbidity and mortality in neonates so early diagnosis and identification of high risk cases is a challenging aim of our study. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of red cell distribution width (RDW), in neonatal sepsis at the time of admission to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Materials and Methods This prospective case control study included 3 groups divided into Group 1: Neonates with sepsis (78 neonates), Group 2: Neonates with severe sepsis (42 neonates) Group 3: Neonates as a control group (60 neonates) were gender, gestational and postnatal ages matched. Red cell distribution width was determined for all included neonates. The score for neonatal acute physiology (SNAP II) was determined within 12 hours of admission to the NICU. Results One hundred and two sepsis newborns (85%), including 66 (64.7%) cases from sepsis group and 36 (35.3%) cases from severe sepsis group, the mortalities were 15.4% (n= 12), and 71.4% (n= 30) for group 1 and 2, respectively. The incidence of RDW increase in survivors group (45.7%) was significantly lower than in the non- survivors group (92.9%, n=39). The score for neonatal acute physiology (SNAP II) was positively correlated with RDW increase in newborns (r= 0.735 and p

Elevated Red Cell Distribution Width as a Prognostic Marker in Severe Sepsis: A Prospective Observational Study

INTRODUCTION Sepsis is a dysregulated host response to infection resulting in potentially life-threatening organ dysfunction. Elevation in red cell distribution width (RDW), a simple routinely done investigation, could be a prognostic marker in these patients. METHODS Between January 2014 and June 2015, 200 patients with severe sepsis at admission were prospectively evaluated for association ...

Diagnostic values of red cell distribution width, platelet distribution width and neutrophil-lymphocyte count ratio for sepsis.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of red blood cell distribution width (RDW), platelet distribution width (PDW), the neutrophil-lymphocyte count ratio (NLCR), procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) for the prediction of sepsis. A total of 120 consecutive patients who underwent blood culture testing were included. The PCT and CRP levels, and RDW, PDW and N...

Red blood cell distribution width: a determinant of hospital mortality in pancreatitis

Objective: In recent years, there has been a great attention concerning red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in clinical decisions as well as determining the severity of diseases. This study was conducted to evaluate the primary level of RDW to predict hospital mortality in pancreatitis. Methods: This was a descriptive analytical study performed on 100 pati...

Prognostic significance of the red blood cell distribution width in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma patients

This study examined the prognostic value of the baseline red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients. The associations between RDW and clinical characteristics were assessed in 161 DLBCL patients from 2005 to 2016. The log-rank test, univariate analysis, and Cox regression analysis were used to evaluate the relationship between RDW and survival. A R...

The red distribution width and the platelet distribution width as prognostic predictors in gastric cancer

BACKGROUND Increasing attention is focused on the relationship of inflammation biomarkers with malignant tumors. The purpose of the present study was to detect whether the preoperative the red distribution width (RDW) and the platelet distribution width (PDW) can be used to distinguish patients with gastric cancer (GC) or early stage GC from the healthy controls and predict the progression and ...
